A subset is a group of cards within a larger set that shares a common theme, design element, or category — but is still part of the main checklist. Think of it as a set within a set.
Common subset themes include league leaders, award winners, team cards, highlight plays, and record breakers. The cards in a subset use the same card numbering as the main set but are visually distinct — they might have a different border color, a unique design treatment, or a dedicated header.
Subsets add variety and storytelling to a product. Instead of 700 cards that all look the same, subsets break things up and give collectors themed groupings to chase within the larger build. They're the chapters in the book of a baseball card set.
